Vélocity has suspended our Do-It-Yourself (DIY) programs until further notice, due to space limitations and social distancing requirements.
Vélocity proudly offers Do-It-Yourself (DIY) bike repair access to our entire community during DIY shop hours. As part of our mission to build an inclusive biking community, Vélocity Coop commits to educating our community members in bike repairs. A bike rider more knowledgeable in repairs is better able to help others in turn.
While expert Vélocity Coop mechanics and Véloteers still provide traditional bicycle shop services,
Vélocity's DIY programs provide tools, spare parts, and a repair stand, so you can repair your own bicycle. During DIY shop hours Vélocity will provide you with all the instructions and guidance you might need. No experience is required. There's no fees for DIY access, however we respectfully ask for at least a $15 an hour donation so that we can continue to offer this service to our community. Most tune-ups only involving adjustments will take less than an hour if we're not too busy. The donation is only applicable to bike repair stand and tool access; we have tire pumps and some basic adjustment tools available to use for free.
Service-related parts (brake/shifter cables, brake pads, tire tubes, tires, etc.) are reasonably priced and basic used components are typically $5. We also carry selective higher-end new and used parts priced well-below market value in most cases. Plus, Vélocity is able to order anything special your specific service might require if we do not have it in our inventory (e.g. a 1970s-era tricycle parking brake lever.)
Doing it yourself is a great way learn a valuable new skill in a relaxed environment, prevent down-time by not having to leave your bicycle for service, and save a bunch of money!
